Short Links to Folders of Libraries

When linking to a folder or even a folder within a folder of a SharePoint document library (or even deeper), don’t use the link from the address bar rather grab the direct link to the folder from the folder’s properties. Do this by hovering over the folder’s Open Menu and selecting View Properties / Copy Shortcut (if you choose Copy Shortcut from hovering over the folder itself, you’ll need to remove the unneeded content from the copied URL – this used to be simpler prior to SharePoint 2010 in that the unneeded wasn’t available):

MS-SharePoint: Short Links to Folders of Libraries (Copy Shortcut)

“Bad (Long)” URL Example: > Cross Team Files > FAQs Guidelines Procedures

  • sharepoint.com/CrossTeamFiles/Forms/AllItems.aspx?RootFolder=%2FCrossTeamFiles%2FFAQs%20Guidelines%20Procedures&FolderCTID=0x0120008B0DBBBA0D11844187A0D3EA76AD9DFC&View={4940AFE8-3058-4299-BDBC-9D6ED80199AA}

“Good (Short)” URL Example: > Cross Team Files > FAQs Guidelines Procedures

  • sharepoint.com/CrossTeamFiles/FAQs%20Guidelines%20Procedures/

SUMMARY: Capturing a direct link / URL to a folder of a library like this ensures that the URL is as short as possible so that it can be used to hyperlink to, from text and images and use in other hyperlinks, avoiding  the 255 character limit that you’ll exceed when capturing URLs to folders from the address bar only.
